Love Beyond Borders: Strengthening Expat Relationships with Expert Therapy

Living as an expat can bring exciting opportunities, but it can also add unique challenges to your relationship. Cultural differences, work pressures, and a lack of social support can create stress and strain.

As a BACP-accredited psychotherapist and certified Imago relationship therapist with over 15 years of experience. I specialize in helping expat couples build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

Couples often come to me because they experience

These challenges can lead to crises in the relationship, including affairs or the threat of divorce. Together, we will identify the root causes and work toward the loving relationship you desire.

A Three-Step Approach to ReBuild your Relationship

Step 1

gain awareness for marriage

Gain Awareness

Understanding the root cause of your disconnection by accessing the history of the relationship and communication styles. One common issue is the ‘Hailstorm and Turtle’ dynamic . The ‘hailstorm’ person criticizes the other – throwing hailstones at them. The other acts like a turtle, pulling away and going into their shell. The hailstorm person then thinks – I am not getting my point across, so they throw more and larger hails stones – which make the turtle withdraw even more.  Exploring past unresolved hurts that trigger highly emotional reactions is also very important.

Step 2

Improve Communication and Resolve Conflicts

Improve Communication and Resolve Conflicts

Learn skills to communicate calmly and openly to resolve problems, One important technique is known as ,active listening, in which each person paraphrases the other’s opinion before expressing their own. Opinions are also expressed by using “I” statements rather than with accusatory statements that begin with “you.

Step 3

Rekindle Love and Intimacy

Rekindle Love and Intimacy

We focus on rebuilding closeness through small but meaningful act of giving. Dr Gary Chapman explains that there are five ‘love languages’, five ways in which we express love. These are, Gift Giving, Quality Time, Physical Touch, Acts of Service and Words of Appreciation. Understanding and prioritizing each other’s love language reignites care and connection
